Understanding Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to modify breast volume, contour, and proportion in relation to the patient’s body and overall silhouette. The objective is not simply to increase size, but to achieve balance, symmetry, and a natural relationship between the chest, waist, and hips.
This surgery may be considered when there is naturally low breast volume, loss of fullness after pregnancy or weight changes, asymmetry between breasts, or when the existing breast shape does not match the patient’s proportions. The procedure can be performed using implants, fat transfer, or a combination of techniques depending on anatomy and goals.
From a medical standpoint, breast augmentation is appropriate when expectations are realistic and when the patient understands that the goal is proportional enhancement rather than dramatic transformation. When tissue characteristics, skin quality, or structural support do not favor predictable outcomes, alternative strategies or staged approaches may be recommended.
The intention is not to create breasts that draw attention, but to create a result that appears harmonious with the body and natural in movement and proportion.

Planning Your Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation cannot be standardized because each patient differs in chest width, tissue thickness, skin elasticity, existing volume, and body proportions. For this reason, planning is the most important phase of the procedure.
During evaluation, breast anatomy, implant positioning options, tissue support, skin characteristics, and the patient’s aesthetic goals are carefully assessed. These factors determine whether implants, fat transfer, or a combined approach is most appropriate, as well as the safest surgical plan and expected recovery process.
Because the procedure is individualized, decisions about technique, implant type, size, and placement are defined only after a detailed medical assessment.

FAQ

Question icon

How is the appropriate implant selected?

Implant selection is determined during clinical evaluation, considering the patient’s anatomy, tissue characteristics, proportions, and surgical goals. Factors such as implant size, projection, shape, and placement are chosen to achieve balanced outcomes while respecting long-term tissue behavior.

Question icon

Are there risks associated with breast augmentation?

As with any surgical procedure, breast augmentation involves potential risks, including infection, bleeding, capsular contracture, implant displacement or rupture, asymmetry, changes in sensation, or visible implant edges depending on tissue characteristics. A thorough evaluation and careful surgical planning help determine candidacy and reduce the likelihood of complications.

Question icon

What are the goals of breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation aims to improve breast volume, projection, and proportion in relation to the patient’s anatomy. When carefully planned, the procedure can help restore balance between anatomical areas and support a contour that aligns with the patient’s structural characteristics and aesthetic goals.

Question icon

What is recovery like after breast augmentation?

Recovery after breast augmentation varies according to the surgical approach and the patient’s healing response. Most patients progressively resume routine activities over the following weeks, while swelling control, implant stabilization, and activity restrictions are monitored during follow-up visits. Strenuous exercise is usually postponed until adequate healing and medical clearance.
